about

Cacophony (Working title - "Nate James' Fantastic Yellow Whirling Plastic Ren Fest Tube") began life when Nate brought in a couple of strange instruments from a Renaissance festival. He said "I found these things that make weird noises and they made me think of you, Ian." Thanks, buddy!

First up, a corrugated yellow tube (RIP) that make these weird overtoney noises when you swung it in the air like a helicopter blade. These are the 'whispy' high noises that open the album. Second, a little ceramic bird that you fill with water and blow into to make tweet noises. This is the whistling sounds you hear throughout the first track.

Next, Nathan wanted a big gesture, so the big sound you hear is actually a reversed piano with the attack lopped off. I believe it was my idea to remove the attack to give it a 'broken' sound.

All of the piano notes in the introduction were improvised, to my knowledge. At the time it was recorded we only had a handful of tunes recorded, so I suggested tagging the 'poppiest' tune ("Questions?" at the end of the most 'unstructured' one to communicate that the record you were listening to was about to run the gauntlet of musical extremes (hopefully). We also decided then it should open the album.
